Questions

Good to know

Who is this course for?
Students who have completed Honky-Tonk Two-Step 101 and Intermediate 1, or have an equivalent intermediate foundation. It suits dancers ready for sweetheart and shadow positions, smooth connector moves, and adapting to live music, plus anyone prepping for a wedding, party, or live-music night who wants real variety on the floor.
Do I need a partner to take this course?
Not at all. You'll get more out of practicing with a partner, but you can learn on your own and we'll show you how. When you're ready, you'll have the tools to dance with a partner confidently.
Do I need to complete 101 and Intermediate 1 first?
Yes. This course assumes you know the foundation from both Honky-Tonk Two-Step 101 and Intermediate 1. If you are not sure about your level, email us at Howdy@DoubleOrNothingTwoStep.com and we will help you find the right starting point.
What kind of dancing is this?
It's the feel-good social dancing you'll see in Austin honky-tonks every night of the week, the dance that turns strangers into friends and gets you off the wall and onto the floor. Dancers in NYC, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Melbourne are already learning it from home with our courses.
Can I take this course even if I don't live in Texas?
Definitely. This style is fun, versatile, and can be done anywhere, from your living room to a wedding dance floor to a bar in your hometown.
Is this course just for couples or date nights?
Nope. It's for anyone who wants to move, groove, and feel confident dancing socially. Whether you're solo, with a friend, or surprising your partner, this course is for you.
What will I need to get started?
Just a little space to move, shoes that slide (socks work too), and your favorite playlist or one of ours. We'll guide you through the rest.
How long does the course take?
You can complete it in about three to four weeks, or go at your own pace. You get lifetime access, so you can review any time.
What is honky-tonk two-step?
It's the feel-good partner dance that fills Austin's honky-tonks every night of the week. It's a three-beat dance to music in 4/4 time, with the first beat slow, the second beat slow, and the third beat quick-quick. It's how locals spend their Tuesdays, how strangers become friends, and how people who swore they couldn't dance find themselves on the floor grinning. Double or Nothing Two-Step named the style and was the first to teach it as an online course.
How is honky-tonk two-step different from regular Texas two-step?
Traditional Texas two-step travels counter-clockwise around the room in a big circle. Honky-tonk two-step is more stationary and compact, built for small, packed bar floors where you can't travel. It folds in swing-style turns and rock steps, so it feels swingier and works in tight spaces.
Is two-step hard to learn?
No, two-step is one of the easiest partner dances to start. It's forgiving, it's fun, and most total beginners are dancing comfortably within their first few practice sessions.
How is this different from line dancing?
Line dancing is done solo in rows with set choreography. Two-step is a partner dance where one person leads and one follows, moving together to the music. This course teaches partner two-step, not line dancing.
Can I really learn to dance from an online course?
Yes. The course breaks each move into short, repeatable video lessons you can pause, rewind, and rewatch as many times as you need, which is something a live group class can't offer. Drill videos build muscle memory, and practice playlists give you the right tempos to rehearse with.
What music do you two-step to?
You two-step to 4/4 country and honky-tonk music, roughly 120 to 160 beats per minute. The course includes beginner practice playlists organized by tempo, and the dance also works to plenty of non-country songs in the same time signature.
What will I learn in Intermediate 2?
You will learn the next level of moves that add variety and flow to your dancing. These are the moves that make you look confident and polished on any dance floor, building directly on the foundation from 101.
What if I have two left feet?
That's exactly who this course is for. We've taught thousands of people who swore they couldn't dance. The dance is a simple skeleton, and you go at your own pace, so there's no keeping up with a room and no judgment.
What if I'm getting ready for a special event, like a wedding?
You're in the right place. This course gives you the skills and confidence to dance socially at weddings, honky-tonks, parties, and anywhere else music plays.
I'm just visiting Austin and want to bring something back. Is this for me?
Yes. Take a piece of the honky-tonk magic home with you. You'll leave with more than memories, you'll have a dance you can enjoy for a lifetime.
Will this be a workout?
It's more about fun and connection than fitness, but don't be surprised if you work up a light sweat. You'll be moving for the love of it.
